This Sunday feels drastically different than the others. As I walk with Piper and Sadie to the dining hall, I’m…content. Happy would be an overstatement, and I’d be lying if I didn’t say things were far from perfect, but today I’m okay. I’m trying to focus on the good, even when it's hard to do so.

Much to Piper and Sadie’s dismay, I’ve done as Reid asked and kept the more personal details of our night by the lake to myself. I would like to be able to tell them about it. I’m looking forward to being able to. But I don’t want to put any information out there that could hurt Reid during his father’s visit.

“Good morning, ladies,” Joel greets us as we approach the student services building. He’s alone, which is unusual.

“Where are the other two?” Piper asks, breezing past him for the door. Something important I’ve learned about Piper—don’t get between her and food when she’s hungry.

“I knocked on Quinn’s door, but he didn’t answer. Reid said he’d meet us.” The simple use of his name makes my insides flutter.

Piper waves us to follow her inside, and we shuffle to the dining hall line. She doesn’t hesitate, picking up a tray and hurrying down the counter like a child in a candy store. It’s adorable how excited she is as she gazes at all of her options, deciding on a stack of chocolate chip pancakes taller than her head. Paired with scrambled eggs and a large coffee, I’m convinced the girl will be wired for the rest of the weekend.

I choose something less elaborate, deciding on a few slices of toast and a small bowl of fruit. We purchase our meals and head back to the picnic area behind the dorms.

Sadie and Joel sit across from Piper and me, Piper immediately digging into her sky-high tower of pancakes.

“Did you have a good time with bat boy last night?” Joel asks, plopping a whole hard-boiled egg into his mouth.

Sadie rolls her eyes, shoving him playfully in the side. “Stop calling him that.”

Before Joel can retort, I jump in. “Do vampires actually become bats?” Three sets of eyes stare at me, and I’m convinced Sadie’s jaw is inches from hitting the floor. It’s comical to witness, the shock that spreads across their faces. “He told me. The six-foot vampire in the room has been conquered.”

“I’m sorry we didn’t tell you. Reid doesn’t typically care, but he specifically asked us not to,” Sadie replies. “And to answer your question, no. Vampires do not turn into bats. At least nobody here does.”

“You had fun on your date, then?” Joel inquires.

“It wasn’t a date.” Another echoes my words, and I turn to find Reid standing behind us.

Reid’s expression is nearly impossible to make out when he rounds the table, taking the open spot beside Joel and across from me. He takes his glasses off, placing them on the table. His eyes are red again, and I’m sure it’s because of the blood that got on his hands last night.
